Advanced Measurements
The Advanced Measurements interface allows you to define measurement functions for your analysis results. Several functions and operators are provided for use in Advanced Measurement expressions; for example, the built-in Summary function computes a given summary statistic for a given measurement and displays the result in the Summary tab of the Spreadsheet.
Interface
To open the Advanced Measurements interface, first open the Spreadsheet tab of the Contents Panel, and then click on the Measurement Tool icon (see right) to open the Image Measurements window. Click on the Advanced tab to view the Advanced Measurements interface (see below).
The top section of the Advanced Measurements interface provides options for creating and editing Advanced Measurements. The bottom section contains a table of all Advanced Measurements.
Section for creating and editing Advanced Measurements
The top section of the Advanced Measurements interface includes textboxes, menus, buttons, and checkboxes for creating/editing measurements; the available options and fields are described in the following table:
Name | Description |
---|---|
Name | Allows you to edit the name of the measurement |
Set | Allows you to select the object set for the measurement |
Measurement | Allows you to select measurements to add to the Advanced Measurement expression |
Insert | Inserts the measurement shown in the Measurement box into the expression |
Expression | Allows you to edit the measurement function |
Add/Update | Adds the measurement defined in the top section to the table of Advanced Measurements or updates the edited measurement |
Generate Intellisense | Toggles whether function and measurement suggestions that are based on what has been typed in the Expression box are shown or not |
Live Expression Parsing and Highlighting | Toggles whether or not the expression is shown in red when it is invalid and otherwise color-coded |
Table of Advanced Measurements
The table of Advanced Measurements shows the name, expression, and input object set for each Advanced Measurement. You may click and drag the vertical white lines that separate the column names to change the column sizes.
Double-click on any row in the table of Advanced Measurements to load the corresponding measurement information into the top section of the interface, where the measurement may be edited.
Click on the Remove icon in the row of a measurement you would like to delete in order to remove that measurement.

Using Advanced Measurements
To add an Advanced Measurement, first navigate to the Image Measurements window by going to the Spreadsheet in the Contents Panel and then clicking on the Measurement Tool icon. Open the Advanced tab of the window, and type the name of the measurement into the designated box. Then, select the object set that the Advanced Measurement will belong to from the Set menu, and type the expression for the Advanced Measurement in the Expression box. You may use the Measurement menu and Insert button to add existing object measurements to the expression. More information on how to include existing measurements as well as which operators and functions are available for use can be found in the following sections as well as the Advanced Measurement Functions page. Once the expression is complete and valid, click on Add to add the measurement to the table of Advanced Measurements. Click Finish to initiate measurement calculation and to exit the Image Measurements window.
To edit an Advanced Measurement, double-click on the measurement in the table of Advanced Measurements; this populates the top section of the interface with the name, object set, and expression for the selected measurement. Edit the information for the measurement, and then click Update to update the Advanced Measurement.
Refer to existing measurements
One way to add an existing measurement to the expression for an Advanced Measurement involves the Measurement menu and Insert button. First, make sure that the measurement you would like to refer to is being calculated, meaning that its box is checked in the appropriate tab of the Image Measurements window. Then, choose the measurement from the Measurement drop-down menu. (If you do not see the desired measurement in the Measurement menu but its box has been checked in the appropriate tab of the window, try clicking Finish and then reopening the Image Measurements window.) Finally, click Insert to add the measurement shown in the Measurement box to the expression.
Existing measurements, including other Advanced Measurements, can also be typed into expressions for Advanced Measurements in the form [Measurement Name (Channel Name)]. If it is turned on, Intellisense will offer suggested measurement references. Make sure that references to other Advanced Measurements include a channel name inside the parentheses.
Use arithmetic operations
The following arithmetic operators may be used in expressions for Advanced Measurements:
Symbol | Operation |
---|---|
+ | Addition |
- | Subtraction |
* | Multiplication |
/ | Division |
% | Modulo |
^ | Exponentiation |
Use logical operations
The following logical operators may be used (with expressions/values on both sides of the operator) in expressions for Advanced Measurements:
Symbol | Name |
---|---|
= | Equal |
! | Not equal |
> | Greater than |
< | Less than |
Use built-in functions
See the Advanced Measurement Functions page for a list of the available functions and their input types and descriptions. More information about each function is also shown when the function is typed into the Expression box of the Advanced Measurements interface (see right).
View Advanced Measurements in the Spreadsheet
Advanced Measurements appear alongside other measurements in the Spreadsheet and generally follow the same rules of organization; however, summary measurements are found in their own Summary tab. Please see the Spreadsheet and How to add measurements to analysis results pages for more information about how the Spreadsheet is laid out.
